IMPORTANT NEW BOOK

This is the most important book to come out in the last 5 years.  You've got to read the write up on this book AND buy your book from POWELLS.COM

1491:

New Revelations

of the Americas

Before Columbus

by Mann, Charles C.
Price:  $34.95

1491  will challenge you to look at this continent, this land, and the whole world with new eyes. This well documented book presents fact after fact that will get you to rethink everything that you have been taught about “the Americas” and European colonization.

For our people this book documents the beauty of our civilizations in all their magnificence and gives the proof of the lies when Europeans said that we were savages and that our land was empty.

The book explains how in 1491 this pair of continents that are falsely called North and South America were nothing like what we were taught in school. There were many cities here that were larger than any city of Europe. The Mexica people of the city of Tenochtitlan, the capital of the so-called Aztecs, lived in a city of 350,000 inhabitants. This was larger than London, which was Europe's largest city with 80,000 inhabitants. The Mexica were the first people in the history of humanity to have mandatory education for people in all ranks of society.  The people of Anahuac ("North America") developed great inventions, contributed to the knowledge of medicine, astronomy, city building, architecture, art, theology, and many other sciences and arts.
The Mexica, Maya, Inca and other civilizations were a world of great studies in the calendar, mathematics, engineering, and countless other accomplishments. This continent had a totally different and beautiful view of the world that now seems like something out of science fiction or fantasy, but it was real.
1491 explains how this continent was conquered more by biological warfare, by smallpox and other diseases, than through anything to do with the canons, armor, steel, horses, or military genius that we were all taught.  Europeans were definitely not superior to us in any way, other than as liars, killers, thieves, rapists, slavers, pirates, unethical/immoral culture, and a criminal nature to all of their dealings with us.
This will be a great addition to books like Howard Zinn's People's History of the United States, James Loewen's Lies My Teacher Told Me, David Stannard's American Holocaust, and James Blaut's Colonizer's Model of the World.

Charles C. Mann has pulled off an impressive feat — a scholarly, thorough work of history that's almost compulsively readable. In 1491, he summarizes and examines the last thirty years of research into the pre-Columbian Americas, and comes to some startling and exciting conclusions. Mann is an enthusiastic and capable guide, and 1491 is satisfyingly rich with description, anecdote, and example.

Publisher Comments:

A groundbreaking study that radically alters our understanding of the Americas before the arrival of the Europeans in 1492.

Traditionally, Americans learned in school that the ancestors of the people who inhabited the Western Hemisphere at the time of Columbus's landing had crossed the Bering Strait twelve thousand years ago; existed mainly in small, nomadic bands; and lived so lightly on the land that the Americas was, for all practical purposes, still a vast wilderness. But as Charles C. Mann now makes clear, archaeologists and anthropologists have spent the last thirty years proving these and many other long-held assumptions wrong.

In a book that startles and persuades, Mann reveals how a new generation of researchers equipped with novel scientific techniques came to previously unheard-of conclusions. Among them:

- In 1491 there were probably more people living in the Americas than in Europe.

- Certain cities-such as Tenochtitlan, the Aztec capital-were far greater in population than any contemporary European city. Furthermore, Tenochtitlan, unlike any capital in Europe at that time, had running water, beautiful botanical gardens, and immaculately clean streets.

- The earliest cities in the Western Hemisphere were thriving before the Egyptians built the great pyramids.

- Pre-Columbian Indians in Mexico developed corn by a breeding process so sophisticated that the journal Science recently described it as man's first, and perhaps the greatest, feat of genetic engineering.

- Amazonian Indians learned how to farm the rain forest without destroying it-a process scientists are studying today in the hope of regaining this lost knowledge.

- Native Americanstransformed their land so completely that Europeans arrived in a hemisphere already massively landscaped by human beings.

Mann sheds clarifying light on the methods used to arrive at these new visions of the pre-Columbian Americas and how they have affected our understanding of our history and our thinking about the environment. His book is an exciting and learned account of scientific inquiry and revelation.

Review:

"In a riveting and fast-paced history, massing archeological, anthropological, scientific and literary evidence, Mann debunks much of what we thought we knew about pre-Columbian America. Reviewing the latest, not widely reported research in Indian demography, origins and ecology, Mann zestfully demonstrates that long before any European explorers set foot in the New World, Native American cultures were flourishing with a high degree of sophistication. The new researchers have turned received wisdom on its head. For example, it has long been believed the Inca fell to Pizarro because they had no metallurgy to produce steel for weapons. In fact, scholars say, the Inca had a highly refined metallurgy, but valued plasticity over strength. What defeated the Inca was not steel but smallpox and resulting internecine warfare. Mann also shows that the Maya constructed huge cities and governed them with a cohesive set of political ideals. Most notably, according to Mann, the Haudenosaunee, in what is now the Northeast U.S., constructed a loose confederation of tribes governed by the principles of individual liberty and social equality. The author also weighs the evidence that Native populations were far larger than previously calculated. Mann, a contributor to the Atlantic Monthly and Science, masterfully assembles a diverse body of scholarship into a first-rate history of Native America and its inhabitants. 56 b&w photos, 15 maps. Agent, Rick Balkin. 40,000 first printing. (Aug. 12)" Publishers Weekly (Starred Review) (Copyright Reed Business Information, Inc.)

Synopsis:

A groundbreaking study that radically alters our understanding of the Americas before the arrival of the Europeans in 1492. Traditionally, Americans have learned in school that the ancestors of American Indians crossed the Bering Strait 12,000 years ago, existed in small, nomadic bands, and lived so lightly on the land that much of the Americas was wilderness when Columbus set sail. But as Charles Mann makes clear, in the last 20 years archaeologists and anthropologists using new research techniques have proven these and other long-held assumptions to be false. He shows us how a new generation of researchers came to the persuasive conclusion that more people lived in the Americas in 1491 than in Europe; that certain of their cities, including the Aztec capital, Tenochtitlan, were greater in size that any European city; that these much larger societies were also older and far more advanced that had been thought (the Indian development of corn is still the most complex and far-reaching example of genetic engineering known); that the Native Americans managed their environments in ways that, if replicated today, could revolutionize local agriculture. 1491 sheds clarifying light on the methods by which these discoveries were made, how they have rewritten part of our history, and how they contribute to today's environmental disputes. It is an impassioned and erudite account of scientific inquiry and revelation.

WEEKLY COMMENT

Sorry for the three months of no magazine, but as you have probabley discovered from following our website, we have been very busy with the events that have drowned us in work. We are still growing in membership, but we also need a lot of help. The following is our statement on "illegals".

"ILLEGALS"

April 16, 2006

PREFACE

In the current "immigration" debates that are now going on, there is only one way that “illegals” can be realistically spoken of, and that is in context of the total collective Indigenous population of “North America” prior to 1492.

In that historical context, the Post-1492 European-descent population that invaded this continent over the next 500 years becomes the only group of “illegals” that can be spoken of. 1492 is the only starting point from which "illegals" can be spoken of on this continent. Without that starting point, European descent people speaking of "illegals" is all a criminal fraud and an immoral lie.

We the collective Indigenous people of this continent have a home, a homeland that is now called "North America". We have no other home, nowhere else to go but this continent. The Indigenous people of Mexico and "Central America" are part of the same people as the Indigenous people of Canada and the United States. We, the collective thinking and conscious Indigenous people of this continent, know that we are one people, one race, and we reject the illegal and artificial European divisions (borders) on our continent and their divisions imposed on our people.

Europeans have a home, a homeland that is called Europe. Europeans have broken and entered into our home, our continent. They have committed crime upon crime to cover up all knowledge of their genocidal crimes against our people, to destroy all our legal rights to our continent and all of its resources. Dividing us by borders, calling us by different names, raping our population, and further dividing us by the different European languages doesn't take away the fact that collectively all of the Indigenous people of this continent are one people, one race, one culture, one nation. Europeans cannot legally or morally take away from us our 50,000 years of racial unity on this continent, and they cannot take away from us our right to be on any part of our continent, and they cannot take away our ownership of this land, this continent, and all of its natural resources.

INTRODUCTION

The Mexica Movement is a Nican Tlaca (Indigenous) rights educational organization for the Nican Tlaca of all of "North America" (Canada, U.S., Mexico, and "Central America"). We are U.S. citizens, U.S.-born citizens, in our majority. We want to clarify important parts of history, crucial facts, that are missing from all of these discussions on "Illegal immigration ".

We the people of Mexican and "Central American" descent are part of the Nican Tlaca, the Indigenous people, of this whole continent. We declare that we are not limited to dwell, or to think of ourselves, within the borders that the European colonial powers have set in place on our continent since 1492.

We declare the unity of all our people, the Indigenous people of this continent:"First Nation", "Native American", Indigenous Mexican, and Indigenous"Central American". We will not be separated by the European imposed borders, languages, religions, definitions, or ignorances that now artificially divide our people.

We have a natural right to travel freely anywhere within our continent, amongst our people —beyond the limits and borders that Europeans have illegally forced upon our people and our continent.

We also declare that the vast majority (over 95%) of the Mexican and “Central American” Population is Nican Tlaca. Our Full-blood (30%) and Mixed-blood (over 65%) population have equal rights to identity as Nican Tlaca, as the Indigenous People of this continent, and as the collective owners of this continent.

The Eurocentric racist nonsense of the “mestizo” labeling (defined by Europeans) of our population has only served as a means to dilute our humanity, to deprive us of our identity as Nican Tlaca, to confuse most of our people, and to take away our rights to our whole continent.

To clarify matters let’s look at an African person who is raped with European blood. Their child is called a “mulatto” by Europeans. That child is not considered part of the European race—no matter how light the child is. In fact, both the European and African people agree that the child becomes a person of African heritage and identity. That same simple logic applies to a Nican Tlaca (Indigenous) person who is raped (we have been collectively and continuously raped over the last 500 years). Our child of rape is called “mestizo” by Europeans. That child is not considered part of the European race. But somehow that child is considered disconnected from its Nican Tlaca identity and heritage. The reality is that the child is part of the Nican Tlaca race, no matter how light the child is. But Europeans have convinced our people that the Mixed-bloods are a new race. And many of our people believe this lie. Our people go so far as to think that the more they marry the lighter of our people (or white people) that it is an improvement of "the race". This is just a form of racism, a form of Genocide. This is simply assimilation and genocide. It is self-hate. It is self-racism. It is European imposed collective suicide, suicide by ignorance and self-hate.

We reject the right of Europeans to define who we are. We reject their occupation of our continent and their occupation of our DNA. We reject the racist notion that we are forever doomed to serve the interests of Europeans on our continent. We reject the racist notion that we can never be free from Europeans. We reject the notion that Europeans will forever control our continent.

"ILLEGALS"

The SOS, Minutemen, CNN, FOX News, and other racist organizations and institutions have broken a major taboo by speaking in complaint against the underground economy that keeps key components of the U.S. economy thriving—with the hard work of Mexican and “Central American” undocumented Nican Tlaca (Indigenous) workers of this continent. Our people (U.S. born, citizens, documented, and undocumented) are the new slaves (of European colonial capitalism). We are the drones who serve in the racist European control of our continent.

The non-corporate racists want to make a loud complain about “illegals” crossing the Mexican “border” (but no complains about the undocumented white Canadians or the Europeans who successfully come to take middle and upper middle class jobs from Americans). The colonialist game of "Latino/Hispanic" as a way to make us seem "Quasi-European", and thus an element foreign to this continent, has been dropped altogether and the "Brown invasion" identity is now used, suddenly we (Nican Tlaca Mexicans and "Central Americans") are now magically "Mexican" again. Racism has regained the shine of the days of the racist glory days of the Klu Kux Klan.

Racists want to talk about “illegals” from Mexico stealing resources from taxpayers (schools, hospitals, and other public services). The racists can actually see one truth, apart from all their lies, that our own people cannot see: that Mexicans and "Central Americans" are the same people, the same Nican Tlaca Indigenous people. That's one truth that our own people have yet to come to terms with because of the ignorance about Nican Tlaca heritage that has been imposed on us. They are still in colonial ignorance and a European imposed self-hate that has our people desperately trying to appear white, or to seemingly pass for white, or to be accepted as not Nican Tlaca.

And finally in all of this chaos and ignorance, racists claim that U.S. sovereignty is being violated, that the laws are not being obeyed (or enforced).

We would like to respond to all of this by first speaking of the monstrous injustices and acts of terrorism that have been committed against us, as the Nican Tlaca, the Indigenous people of this continent, over the last 500 years, from the point when the Europeans first illegally trespassed on our continent in 1492.

During the last 500 years our Nican Tlaca borders have been illegally crossed by Europeans (from the Atlantic Ocean) again and again. Europeans have stolen the resources of our continent (resources which remain stolen property, stolen wealth, to this day). They stole the gold and silver treasuries of our cities (yes, we had cities larger than Europe in the 16th century) to begin what is called modern capitalism. They have used our wealth to enrich all Europeans worldwide and to impoverish our people. Our sovereignty (our independence) has been violated, in fact we are still an occupied and colonized continent to this day. We have been killed individually, massacred in the thousands, tortured, mutilated, enslaved, moved off or our lands, relocated, and dehumanized by the evil that is European colonialism.

We most importantly want to point out that the largest holocaust in the history of humanity (33 million killed just in “North America”, 70 to 100 million killed in the whole Western Hemisphere) was inflicted on the majority of us by Europeans in the 16th and 17th centuries, and the rest of us in the 18th and 19th centuries. If they had not done that holocaust on our people there would have been no empty land for Europeans to “settle”, or more properly, to squat upon.

The secret of European success in the world today lies in their intentional use of smallpox and other biological weapons of mass destruction against us (killing 95% of our population). This holocaust is still of one of humanity’s worst unknown crimes. The full extent of this crime is little known outside of limited academic circles because it is not taught in the general education of the schools of the U.S., Canada, Mexico, or "Central America"—or the rest of the world.

We have still not recovered from that holocaust against our population. But there was also the destruction of our civilizations, the destruction of our culture, the massacres of our leadership, the ongoing theft of all of the wealth of the natural resources of this continent, and countless other crimes that have left us impoverished, and enslaved to Europeans.

When you know all of this history you should be forced to forget the false borders on our land, our continent. You will need to forget all racists notions of justified colonialism or necessary "conquest". You need to be honest about how this land, our continent was acquired—by theft, by murder, by massacres, by genocide, by lies, by monstrous immoral crimes against our people.

We will not be thrown out of our own home, our own land by those who invaded our continent. We will not allow the thieves of the wealth of resources of our continent to call us thieves. We will not allow the foreign illegal occupiers of our continent to call us foreigners, “illegals”, “aliens”. We will not allow our people to be newly terrorized by Europeans (Europeans like Schwarzennegger or Sensenbrenner) or the racist European descendants of the people who committed all these monstrous crimes against our people.

Yes we know that not all Europeans are racist. We know that some European descent people are actually helping to bring truth and justice to the world, and that some of our own people are working with racists.

Yes, we want to talk about “illegals”, but in context of the last 500 years of European colonial crimes against our sovereignty. We also want to talk about stolen resources, the stolen resources of this entire continent, our continent. We also want to talk about the “illegal” 1492 crossing of the Atlantic Ocean border by Europeans. But we all need to be at least on the same book, the book of truth and justice, if not on the same page.

How dare these racists , these illegal occupiers of our continent, these beneficiaries of genocide, slavery, massacres, biological warfare, and countless other savage crimes, challenge our rights, as the Nican Tlaca, Indigenous people this continent, to move to any part of this our continent. The monstrous gall of these racists, these spiritual sons and daughters of Hitler, to challenge any of our people’s right to exist on any part of this continent.

We acknowledge that racism and colonialism still exists against our people in what is called “Canada”, “The U.S.”, Mexico, and the “Republics of Central America”. This whole continent, the whole Western Hemisphere, is still controlled by Europeans and their descendants. We are working to make sure that Justice will be achieved for us, as the only collective true owners of this continent. Colonialism must be confronted for all of its ongoing crimes against us, the Indigenous people of this continent. The claim by European descent people that they had nothing to do with the crimes of the past, of their ancestors, and that they should not be held responsible rings hollow when the full equation is talked about. European descent people on our continent cannot take all the wealth and benefits of being on this continent (that are a direct result of the crimes of theft and genocide by their ancestors) and then claim none of the responsibilities for the crimes, and claim that they now own all of the property and wealth that their ancestors stole. You can't have it both ways. Don't reap the benefits of the crimes if you don't want to be associated with the crimes of your ancestors. Your mere presence on our continent is a benefit of the crimes of your ancestors. What does the law say about people who are in possession of stolen property? Do they get to keep the stolen property or are they in fact criminals for knowingly keeping property?

The SOS, Minutemen, and the other racists need to learn some of this monstrous history of colonialism and genocide which will hopefully get them to know some shame, and then maybe the more honest and moral of them will work to make some justice out of the tragedy that their ancestors forced upon our people. Remember this even if you are not racist. Remember what truly civilized people do, what truly Christian people are supposed to do, what truly moral people should do, or else drop the pretense of being civilized or moral.

Can you be honest about all of what has been presented to you here? Or will you, European descent people, act like a criminals and continue with things as they are. And, our people, are you going to let all thing continue as they are, with our people in ignorance, in poverty, in disgrace and dishonor?

Remember finally that we are all human beings and that we should all remember that old adage: Treat other people the way that you would like to be treated. If we all remember that and we all live that adage then there is hope for the human race.

We need to reconstruct

our Anahuac-centered knowledge base.

Our Anahuac knowledge starts

with the vast Mexica sources that are available.

These sources are in some case corrupted

but they are NOT UN-reconstructable.

These Mexica sources

are an intellectual, dignified, honest,

and honorable way to study

our Anahuac heritage.

Little by little we can study

the rest of our Anahuac heritage.

But first we must begin

by learning the basic facts:

1) We must learn our true Anahuac history, the history that happened before the European invasion.  That history that happened before 1492, which is 99% of our history.

2) We must learn of our great accomplishments.  These accomplishments are the basis of our true pride, a great pride that is missing from us today.  We are being kept from our pride by the Europeans who control our lives, our continent, and the wealth of our land.

3) We must be clear about our core Nican Tlaca (Indigenous) identity.  Forget the borders, the languages, the shades of color.  Our Nican Tlaca identity cancels out the scar of the rape of our people.  Mixed-blood or Full-blood, we are still Nican Tlaca.  The rape that has scared us does not matter---it is only a scar, that scar does not define us.

4) We must keep an awareness of the past and the ongoing crimes of the Europeans.  This means we should know our proper anger

----and that we should be teaching the Europeans on our continent their proper shame.

5) We must be conscious of our present slave condition.  It is a condition which we must confront with actions of liberation.  These actions can be best done through the Anahuac-centered education warrior work of the Mexica Movement.  The Mexica Movement is the warrior instrument which is leading our people to the total liberation of our people.  This liberation will end all European control over our lives and our continent.

     FACTS  Y O U   S H O U L D   K N OW

MEXICA    Mexica (Meh-shee-kah) is the original Nahuatl (the so-called Aztec language) way of pronouncing Mexican, Mexicano, and Chicano and Chicana. The Mexica was the last of our great Anahuac civilizations (1325 to 1521).

Mexica is the only one of our cultures and civilizations which has enough surviving material sources from which we can reconstruct our Anahuac nation.

The Mexica were victims of an ethnocide that left no one today who can authentically call themselves Mexica, much like in Italy there is no one who can authentically call themselves Roman.

Therefore, the rest of us who have lost all of our Anahuac civilization identity and culture or tribal identity and culture, and even those of us who have a civilization or tribal identity, can and should embrace Mexica identity as a collective identity for all of us, along with our known civilization or tribal group.

We need to have this Mexica identity in unity in order to reconstruct our Anahuac nation and as a means of assured reconstruction of Anahuac and as an assured tool of Liberation.

Mexica does not negate Maya or Huichol or Comanche or Shoshone or any of our other Nican Tlaca (Indigenous) civilizations or cultures.

Mexica is our point of unity and our means of reconstructing all of our nation.

ANAHUAC    Anahuac (Ah-nah-wak) is the true name of our nation. We are all part of the Anahuac civilization that gave us the Olmeca, Zapoteca, Teotihuacan-Toltec, Maya and Mexica civilizations. The Mexica part of our Anahuac heritage is how we can reconstruct ourselves as a Nican Tlaca (Indigenous) nation, as the Anahuac Nation. We have historic, cultural, linguistic, and racial factors that make us one Anahuac nation, which includes all of our civilizations and cultures. The Mexica heritage gives us a history, language, theology, and study base from which we can rebuild all of our Anahuac heritage.  We are a beautiful mosaic of civilizations and cultures throughout this whole continent that Europeans call "America".  But this is not "America", this is Anahuac.

NICAN TLACA    Nican Tlaca is our Nahuatl (Mexica) language way of saying "We the people here", in reference to all of us who are Indigenous to Cemanahuac (what Europeans call "the Western Hemisphere") and more specific to Anahuac which is the northern part of Cemanahuac (which is falsely called "North America"). Nican Tlaca refers to all of the people of our race in the "Western Hemisphere".  We are not Indians or indios because those are the people of a nation called India.  We are also not "Native American" because we are not related to Amerigo Vespucci, nor do we accept the concept of "Native" because it is always used in a derogatory manner.  Notice how there are no "Native" Europeans.

NOT MESTIZO    Mestizo is a racist term imposed on us by the Europeans.  Mestizo (Mixed-blood)as an identity denies us our full humanity, it enslaves us to the European world.  Full-blood or Mixed-blood we are still Nican Tlaca. Being Mixed-blood (so-called Mestizo) does not stop us from being Nican Tlaca, no matter how "white" one looks. The shades and physical looks of our Mixed-blood people are just scars from the rape of our nation. The scars do not define us! Our history, our heritage, and our continent ARE what defines us.

"CENTRAL AMERICA"    "Central America" was artificially created in 1823. Before that date we were all part of Anahuac. Anahuac includes Mexico, "Central America", Canada and the so-called U.S. We are not "Central Americans", therefore we use that term it quotes to reject it; while at the same time we know that most of our people are ignorant to its racist and colonial terms and that is the only way that they will know what we are talking about.  Much like us using the English or Spanish language, we use them in order to communicate with our people but we know that they are not our languages.  If we wrote the whole website just in Nahuatl or Maya the majority of our people would not understand a word of our website.

NOT HISPANIC    Hispanics are the Spaniards, the people of Spain. We are not Spaniards! We are Mexica! We are the people of Anahuac.  We are the Nican Tlaca (Indigenous people) of this continent, the true owners of this continent.  We are not Spaniards or the property of Spain.  Calling ourselves "Hispanic" denies us our true Nican Tlaca Anahuac identity, history and heritage. It enslaves us to the interests of the "Spanish" white world. Calling our people Hispanic is racist.  Calling our people Hispanic is like calling the African descent people in the U.S. Britannic because they have British names and because they speak English.

NOT LATINO    Latinos are the Latins: Southern Europeans--the Spaniards, French, and Portuguese. Calling ourselves "Latino" makes us cultural slaves of Europeans. Like Hispanic, Latino is cultural suicide. It is cultural genocide. It betrays our true Nican Tlaca ancestors.

NOT RAZA    "Raza" is not an identity. "Raza" is basically the same thing as using the Eurocentric term "Mestizo"--it takes pride in Spanish blood (what little or nothing that we may have) and puts shame in our Nican Tlaca blood and culture. Calling ourselves "Raza" is a way of saying, "I'm not an 'Indio', I have some, mostly, Spanish blood". In Mexico "Dia de la Raza" is celebrated on October 12---Columbus Day. Imagine that! We are celebrating the rape of our mothers, the rape of our nation, the enslavement of our people.

EUROPEAN, WHITE, AND CRIOLLO are basically the same thing. These are "White" people who are on our continent. Europeans can call themselves "Canadian" or "American" but their homeland is still Europe and they are still trespassing on our continent. A Criollo is someone of "authentic Spanish-European" descent who is still on our land exploiting our people, our resources and our wealth. GENOCIDE as defined by Raphael Lemkin, "...is the planned annihilation [killing] of a national [Mexican] or racial group by a variety of actions [biological warfare, oppression, enslavement] aimed at undermining the foundations essential to the survival of the group [Nican Tlaca of Anahuac] as a group.

MEXICA MOVEMENT is leading the way with actions that defend our people, actions that provide a vision for the liberation of our people, actions that confront the racism against us and the occupation of our continent by Europeans. We declare ourselves independent from the Hispanic-Latino European colonialism and racism that has enslaved us for over 500 years.
